Georgia’s new voting laws include restrictions that suggest voter suppression. The legislation limits drop boxes for mail-in ballots, criminalizes food and water in the voting lines, and restricts absentee voting. Activists say the laws show old tactics from the Jim Crow era. Those in favor of the voting laws, hope the new protocol will restore trustworthiness in the election. #MCO335

The MLB planned to host the 2021 All Star game at Atlanta Braves stadium. Due to the passing of the voter laws, the MLB decided to relocate, taking thousands of dollars to Colorado instead. The status of voter laws in Colorado were questioned, but White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirmed the laws are not the same restrictions placed on Georgia voters. Colorado doesn’t limit absentee voting time or restrict food and water in voting lines.

Activists and civil rights groups filed a lawsuit against the voter restrictions. Axios gathered that these restrictions for voters rights, “particularly voters of color, new citizens and religious communities,” are a motivation for the lawsuit. Georgia became the first state to pass voter laws since the 2020 election and Biden’s presidency.

In the 2020 election, Georgia became a key state in determining who won the presidency. Georgia turned the state blue and elected democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in a run-off election. Democrats have control of the senate with Georgia’s results. Warnock also became the first black democrat to be elected in the Senate from the south.

President Biden agrees with the activists and civil rights groups that the law doesn’t support or advocate for communities of color to have equal access to voting. Biden was the first democratic candidate to win the state of Georgia since 1992. He called the new voting laws an atrocity as it denies people the right to vote.

“Voter Suppression is Violence”. Protestors stand outside of the Atlanta airport, where Delta is the hub and threaten to boycott the company. Delta, the MLB, and Coca-Cola are major corporations who decided to speak out against the Georgia voting laws. They are concerned about their employees, voter fraud and denying rights to communities of color. Eyes were on Georgia during the election and they continue to be as this lawsuit unfolds.
